Agency seeks to prevent adverse drug reactions and improve health outcomes.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed that patients be provided an easy-to-read one-page guide, called Patient Medication Information, with brief and clear information on drug names, their functions, safety information, side effects, and directions for prescription medications.
The current system for written information on prescription drugs along with certain biological products can be confusing, incomplete, and repetitive—leading to frustration and medication noncompliance, which can be harmful to patients’ health. Also, medication noncompliance has contributed to a significant number of hospital admissions, treatment failures, and deaths each year.
FDA Commissioner Robert Califf stated, “Today’s proposed rule is a practical step towards improving the nation’s health. Our public health mission is to ensure drugs and certain biological products are used safely and effectively, help people feel empowered and confident in their ability to manage their care, and prevent negative health outcomes.“
The proposed guide would be provided to patients in outpatient settings and also be accessible online.
